‘One of the loudest voices in the government for nature and the environment’ was a guest at national event at Chester Zoo.
Rebecca Pow, Minister for Nature at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, joined representatives from other parties at the hustings organised by the Wildlife Trusts.
The event, on Monday, 17 June, provided a unique opportunity for voters to compare parties’ plans to achieve legally binding nature targets and utilise nature’s recovery to achieve net zero commitments.
After the hustings the minister chatted with Simon Eardley, the Conservative candidate for Chester North and Neston, who discussed his priorities on the environment if he was elected on July 4th. He said:
“It was fantastic to welcome the Minister for Nature to Chester Zoo for the National Big Climate and Nature debate.
“Rebecca Pow has been one of the loudest voices for nature and the environment in Government and has used her position to make a real and positive difference.
“In my own work as a councillor I’ve championed positive environmental initiatives such as a wildflower area creation. I’ve also planted trees and new hedges and led campaigns to eliminate the use of single use plastics.
“Our positive record on one of the biggest issues around just now is one I am proud to be associated with. Just a few of the real and substantive measures we've taken include signing the Net Zero pledge in law, making us the first major economy to do so, planting millions of trees across the whole country and the landmark Environment Act.
"The Conservatives can be proud of our record in government, but there’s always more to do. Protecting our environment and restoring nature is one of my key priorities for Chester North and Neston.
“If elected as the MP here I will always stand up for the environment locally and nationally. It matters for us all now and for future generations. I’m fully committed to doing my bit here in our part of Cheshire.”
